Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Clearly their answer to Sgt. Pepper's, or at least "All You Need is Love", Satanic Majesties is actually as sloppy an artifact as Flowers. But even at their most (wilfully?) goofy '60s moment, the Stones came up with some good songs. "She's a Rainbow" is fine second-tier pop-psychedelia, while "2000 Light Years From Home" can still transmit a pretty handsome case of the Fear. Bill Wyman's "In Another Land" is as thin as his phased vocal, but still plays better than "Sing This All Together (See What Happens)". Not the most essential Stones disc by a long shot, but one that fans will want to own sooner or later. --Rickey Wright

CD Description

Part druggy experiment, part musical rivalry with the Fab Four, and a total anomaly in the Rolling Stones' catalogue, THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST contains at least three trippy classics in "Citadel", "She's a Rainbow", and "2000 Light Years From Home". That it also contains an extensive sample of Bill Wyman snoring and an eight-minute stoned jam that begins with the timeless phrase "Where's that joint?" is a measure of SATANIC MAJESTIES' breadth of genius and folly.
There's a lot going on here--try comparing the wayward Eastern atmospheres of "Gomper" to anything on BEGGAR'S BANQUET, and marvel that you're listening to the same band. The fact that Jagger and Richards could still come up with the unimpeachably charming "She's a Rainbow"--baroque pop at its finest--and a fair stab at heavy R&B in "The Lantern", while attempting to negotiate the band's rocky passage through Flower Power is a tribute to their vision, their perseverance, and their drugs of choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER!!, 25 Mar 2002
By A Customer
This album has always been a great favourite of mine and it ranks up there with everything else they did that was brilliant up to and including Goats Head Soup (their last classic in my opinion). I've never understood the negative reviews given by the music press for this album. I completely disagree that it's a pale immitation or 'an answer' to Sgt Pepper (whatever that means?). Musically it sounds nothing like Sgt Pepper! It just happened to be released in the same year and has a similar colourful sleeve (even if the Beatles heads can be seen if you look closely!) Many of the bands were changing their style and experimenting with new sounds. Why should the Stones be any different? The songs are great, the band sound great. There are also some amusing bits: Jagger asking 'where's that joint?'at the beginning of 'Sing this all together (see what happens)' and his drunken toff voice in 'On with the Show' which also has Brian Jones playing the harp (the stringed variety). Keith Richard's guitar playing is fantastic - check out 'The Lantern'!! Being a lover of Indian music, the 'Gomper' is a beautiful piece.. Bill Wyman's 'In another Land' is a great tune with tongue in cheek lyrics. In the chorus, if you stick your ear to the speaker that doesn't have Mick Jagger's voice , you can actually hear Steve Marriott's clear and powerful voice singing along.

It's great to see that there are others who love this album. I also love 'Between the Buttons' (also have never seen a good press review!?)- sadly the CD of that is not the English Decca version (though you can get the 2 omitted songs (Please go home & Back street girl') on Flowers). Satanic Majesties is the first Stones album not to have been bastardized by 'London Records' so the CD that you hear is as the Stones intended...
In all its psychedelic wonder...

5.0 out of 5 stars If you love psycadelia, you need this album!, 1 Dec 2001
By A Customer
Worried by what I had heard about it, I decided to give it a try. The critics, IMO, are completely wrong! It's a lovely album, much more psycadelic than Sgt Pepper's, and perfect for a spaced out evening, going intergalactic with 2000 Light Years From Home. She's a Rainbow is a fantastic song, and the whimsical In Another Land is so cute. 2000 Man reminds me of The Kinks Plastic Man (people think he's weird) and presents us with a grim vision of the future ("having an affair with a random computer" - come true via internet dating?)
This album has very rich musical colouring. Does anyone know of a holographic cover? - I think it was once issued with one, which added further to the pscycadelic effect.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic by any other name..., 16 Jan 2003
If I had to save just one Stones album for posterity "Their Satanic Majesties Request" would be my unconditional first choice. I think a lot of the unjustified opprobrium this album has received is a result of John Lennon's remark (in "Lennon Remembers"), born of hypersensitivity and possessiveness about The Beatles, that it was just a pale imitation of "Sgt Pepper". It's sad to see the way the Stones themselves have been bullied into virtually disowning it by the usual dreary crew of rock journalists, who misinterpret musical complexity as inauthenticity. This album is by no means a complete departure; there were indications of its direction on its superb predecessor, "Between The Buttons". Any other album boasting as many great songs ("Citadel", "In Another Land", "2000 Man", "She's A Rainbow", "The Lantern", "Gomper", "2000 Light Years From Home") would be hailed as a classic, but the leather-jacket rock-journo brigade remain unmoved. More fools them! Still, those of us not paid to tout narrow-mindedness in the rock press can relish this rich, colourful, melodious, cohesive and utterly original album while admiring the excellent artwork of its packaging. If you want to hear a mess (albeit a fairly lovable one) try the rock journos' favourite, "Exile On Main Street"!
